Famous Sufferers

  • Martin Luther – One of the preeminent founders and leaders of the Protestant Reformation.1I highly recommend the recent film with Joseph Fiennes as Luther to anyone suffering from OCD and looking for a graceful experience. This film is filled with grace and mercy and demonstrates well Luther’s agonies.
  • John Bunyan – Author of the Pilgrim’s Progress, the second most published book in the world after the Bible. His struggles are chronicled fairly extensively in his autobiographical work Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners.
  • Therese of Lisieux – A nun who died while still in her twenties, she suffered severe OCD and developed a theology in many ways similar to Martin Luther’s, but entirely apart (and at a later time) and while remaining within the Catholic church.
  • Alphonsus Maria de Liguori – Founder of the Catholic Redemptorists, suffered from scrupulosity, those in his order run the Scrupulous Anonymous newsletter which has been an incalculable help to many sufferers.
  • Ignatius of Loyola – Founder of the Catholic Society of Jesus and author of the Spiritual Exercises, he suffered from a comparatively light version of OCD.
